Chrysler Maintenance Guide

5K Service    15K Service     30K Service

If you could describe the 4 seasons we experience here in beautiful New York State, would mountains of snow, lakes of rain, humidity and below freezing temperatures come to mind? The crazy weather patterns here can cause engine wear and tear which can lead to expensive service bills. To keep your Chrsyler Dodge or Jeep running well for a long time, it is important to follow steps for preventative maintenance.

How frequently should I get my oil changed?
With a standard oil change, you should be scheduling an oil change for every 3,000 miles. By using synthetic oil, you won't have to schedule another oil change until you've driven 5,000 miles. Regardless of what type of oil you buy though, we suggest you never drive more than 6 months without an oil change. Getting your oil changed regularly will prevent wear and tear on engine parts and will allow it to run cooler. If you don't change your oil as frequently as suggested, it can cause damage to your engine. To maximize the life of your engine and it's reliability, it is important to keep changing the oil regularly.

My tire pressure light is on?
When any light comes on, it means your car is trying to tell you that something is wrong. While the tire pressure light doesn't pose an immediate threat to your car, you should take care of the issue relatively quickly so it doesn't cause an accident. To inflate your tires, you can either pull into the closest car repair shop or you can find out what your manufacturer's specified pressure is for your tires and fill them up at the nearest gas station. Properly inflated tires will wear your tires evenly and make for a comfortable ride. Driving on low pressure tires will cause tire wear and tear, your won't handle easily and it may even result in you having to replace your suspension.

What does the check engine light mean?
It could mean a number of things but the severity of it depends on what exactly the light is doing. When the light is blinking you should stop driving and get your car towed to a shop. If the light is on solid you can wait and see if it resets but after a couple days of it being on, you should schedule an appointment to have the problem diagnosed.

Why should I get my tires rotated and balanced?
Making sure your tires are being rotated and balanced will allow your tires to last longer because they will wear evenly and create a smoother ride. When tires are not treated to regular service, not only will the tires need to be replaced but the suspension parts will need replacing as well. If tires are not rotated and balanced as frequently as every 8,000 miles, they can be dangerous to drive on.

What is a transmission flush?
Over time, sludge and grime will build up in hoses which can decrease performance and longevity of the vehicle. Getting your transmission flushed will remove the contaminated fluid which will allow for proper lubrication of the internal equipment. Flushing will also cause easier shifting which will result in your transmission operating at a cooler temperature. Without a transmission flush, you will find metal filings clogging the clutch as well and can even cause overheating. Don't risk having your car breakdown on the side of the road, make sure your getting your transmission flushed.

The air conditioning in my car doesn't work?

It's important to stay comfortable while driving, therefore air conditioning in the summer months is more of a necessity and less of a luxury. It is not a minor problem, you should not just settle for driving with your windows rolled down, it is important you get the air conditioning tested to extend the life of the system. A broken air conditioning unit can lead to mold and fungi growing throughout the system which will cause rust and premature wear.

Do I need to get my coolant system serviced?
Coolant needs to be replaced and the hoses and lines should be cleaned to help ensure proper coolant temperature by removing contaminants. By not replacing and cleaning the system when recommended, there will be damage to the lines and hoses. It may even cause your car to breakdown due to overheating.

When should I replace my air filter?

An air filter should be replaced every 15,000 miles to keep it working efficiently. If your vehicle tends to drive through dirtier, dustier conditions you will want to think about getting it changed sooner than 15,000 miles. The dirtier the air filter is, the less gas mileage your vehicle is going to get. A dirty air filter can also cause damage to spark plugs and create stress on the engine which will cause a decrease in performance. By driving with a dirty air filter, you will notice problems with the engine due to contamination.

My car makes weird noises when I drive?
If you hear squeaking and rattling coming from your car, it can simply mean you need a lube job. Adding lubrication to the base frame of a vehicle will reduce friction on any parts that are close enough to come into contact with each other.

How do I make my car battery last?
Bringing your car in for routine service will allow the mechanics to take a look at it each time it's in the shop and let you know if they see any problems with it. They will keep the battery clean and make sure everything is connected properly. Having a clean battery will prevent electrical problems and the vehicle will start much easier. By not getting your battery checked regularly, it will start to fail, eventually you won't be able to get it to start and there will be cable corrosion and acid spills.
